82 x 82 cm, oil on canvas
The painting depicts Melchizedek (king of Salem, which later became Jerusalem, as I understand it). He appears suddenly in the Scriptures (we have no genealogy) and disappears just as suddenly – the only mention is of his meeting with Abraham after the battle. Melchizedek is depicted blurred, like a man of antiquity, and the messianic symbols (bread and wine, the shepherd’s crook and the lamb) are more realistic, because we live with them now. Two cups – one for the host of the house, the other for the viewer – invite everyone to participate in the sacred action. This painting was inspired by a mosaic in the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. It depicts Melchizedek with Abel and Abraham, and illustrates the sacrifices of Abel and Melchizedek, which foreshadow the sacrifice of Christ. The tablecloth also features the seal of Melchizedek and some other symbols.
